BIOGRAPHY
U.nited S.tates of A.frica Dropping September 2009
Young Nations’ music is the birth of a fresh sound coined as ‘continental African hip-hop’. As a South African of Zulu descent spending time in South Los Angeles, London, Zimbabwe, Paris and Zaire, you begin to understand the depth of his experiences. Young Nations brings the experiences, insight and perspective he’s gained directly into his music; the incredible hard-hitting global reality of young African artist living in the world today.
In 1989 Nations travelled to South Africa for the second time, a privilege not afforded to his father, who remained banned from returning to South Africa for over 36 years. Nations’ experiences in South Africa during apartheid would later influence his first debut album, ‘Nations Uprising’.
Having performed on the same stage as artists such as Ice Cube, Coolio, Zap, Rappin4Tay and the Lynch Mob early on, Young Nations exploded on the world music scene with the ground breaking hit, “Win”. The song featured on CNN as a anthem for youth in Africa. Nations quickly followed up “Win” with the classic “Mr. Hustla”, a straight hip hop b-boy banger from the same album.
“Nations Uprising” was produced by Grammy Nominated super-producer Megahertz and Botswana born hip hop producer Draztik. Released as part of YFM’s “Life” compilation distributed by Universal Music, “Mr. Hustla” remained one of the hottest releases of the album. The acoustic guitar based “Rock On”, was reinforced by the Draztik produced “Africa Prey”, which debuted number one on Radio Metro’s National Top 10 countdown. The official debut single, “Zwakala Emzansi” produced by Draztik, was a groundbreaking collaboration with legendary recording artist Ray Phiri and Stimela. The single hit numerous charts at number one and went on to win nominations for two Channel O Video Music Awards.
Young Nations went on to feature on songs with Metro Award winner Zulu Boy, SAMA Award winner HHP, artists such as Pro-kid, Maggz, and internationally known artist Sean Price of Heltah Skeltah fame. The Young Nations has since become a global ambassador for the continental Africa sound, performing the only hip hop television advert “Inside Africa” in CNN’s history as a broadcaster.
The new Young Nations album, - “THE UNITED STATES OF AFRICA” is currently in final production under Unreleased Records. Scheduled for release this year, September 2009, with collaborations from Proverb, Whosane, and production from Draztik, M-phazes, Hipe, Kanibal and more. The much anticipated new release is packed with the lyrical insight, innovation and unmistakable cadence and style that’s made Young Nations the new global brand.
